Traditional, Transitional, Modern, Contemporary!  What do they really mean?

When designing a kitchen, along with the other rooms that follow suit in your home, you will need to describe the theme or feeling you want to create. Having the lingo down is essential. Here are some very useful terminologies to assist in your creative path. The descriptions that are often confused Traditional and Transitional, the second being Modern vs Contemporary.

Let us characterize the differences.

What is the difference between Transitional vs Traditional?
Some people are surprised when they learn that a Transitional space feels light and airy while a Traditional space exudes a warm and heavy feel. The tone and colours of a Traditional space are more intense and saturated while a Transitional space consists mostly of neutral colours with some pops of soft pastels.

Modern

When we think Modern, we tend to visualize futuristically; however, Modern design refers to an era that has passed.

I am sure this one has thrown many for a loop. The most popular modern design era is the look of the 1950s and 1960s, which is commonly referred to as mid-century modern. Art Deco design of the 1920s up to the vintage look of the 1970s can also be considered Modern.

Modern refers to a specific design movement that arose in the early 20th century and follows stricter guidelines.

Contemporary

In contrast, Contemporary design is all about the now and the future.
Contemporary, by definition, is more fluid and tolerates a bit of rule-breaking. Contemporary is a dynamic, changing term. Contemporary styles allow for more freedom and trends, allowing the homeowner to add a more personal touch to accomplish a beautiful feeling of their own.
